A Long Way From Chicago
This book is about Two kid's Joey and Mary Alice. Joey tells about how he and his little sister go visit their Grandma Dowdel in Chicago every year. It takes place during 1929 through 1942 in a small town during the great depression. Grandma Dowdel has a very interesting lifestyle. The first year Joey and Mary Alice went to visit Grandma, Grandma showed a different side of herself with the help of Shotgun Cheatham, Shotgun Cheatham died and Grandma made uo an exicting story about how he died then she had him in the house in gauz of course and something was scracthing at the gauz from inside the reporter that was there ran away then Grandmas cat got out!
The second year they visited Grandma was based on milk. The cowgills are the people who deliver milk to grandma and one day A horse rode by and all of a sunnden no more mailbox Grandma responded with one word " Cowgills" So to get back at them she had a dead mouse and kept it sit in the milk. Somehow Grandma knew the boy's parents were going to pay her a little visit. After a while the milk sat and when th Cowgills showed up Grandma pretty much told them that if they didnt punnish the boy's for almost breaking into her house that she would distroy there reputation by showing everyone the mouse.
The third year opens up some more thing's about the great depression, As the kid's are on the train headed for grandma's house they see alot of people going from town to town to try to find empoyment because they either lost their jobs or they Quit because they wernt getting paid enough.
In the forth year Grandma is asked to make a pie for the judgement day the winner get's to ride in a plain for free. But there was only one problem Grandma swicthed her pie with another one and her's won they still got the plain ride though.
